Hicksville Nursery School

About Us

Hicksville Nursery School has been operating since 1967, providing parents in our community with an excellent teaching program for 2, 3 and 4 year olds at a reasonable cost.  As a cooperative school, we rely on the assistance of parents to operate and maintain our school, whether it be serving on our Parent Board, assisting in the classroom or painting and making repairs in the school.  As a family oriented school, we understand that there are many parents who work and are unable to participate and for those parents we offer a non-participating program.

For our 2 year old students the classes are 2 hours per day, 9:15 – 11:15am Monday and Wednesday.  The 2 year olds begin with just 2 days per week to help them get acclimated to the school environment and when parents feel they are ready, Friday is added as the 3rd day.

Our classes for 3 and 4 year old students are 3 hours per day, beginning at 9:15am and ending at 12:15pm with your choice of 2,3, 4 or 5 days per week.  Parents are able to pick which days work best for them and their children.

Our school has a slow separation policy where parents are welcome to stay at the school as their child adjusts.  We understand that sometimes it just doesn’t work to just drop your child off, some children need time with a parent in the classroom to see that school is a good place and we welcome parents at all times.

Diapers are also welcome at our school.  Understanding that many children are not fully potty trained when they are ready for school, and that sometimes seeing another child go to the potty encourages children who are still a little leery of the toilet.  By law, we are not able to change a child’s diaper, so if an accident does occur, we will contact a parent to change their diaper.

In addition to our regular student curriculum, during the year we offer students many other learning experiences.  For example:

Fire safety:  The local fire department visits our school to teach children how to stop, drop and roll.   They also get to climb aboard a fire truck and talk with the firefighters to learn about what they do.

Dental health:  A local pediatric dentist visits our school and talks with the children about dental health and teach them about brushing and caring for their teeth by putting on a puppet show.

Community:  During the year we discuss with the students about the American Troops in other countries who protect our freedom.  The children make crafts, cards and/or gifts in art class and collect necessary essentials (and some candy treats too!) to send to our troops  to let them know how much we honor and respect them for all they do.  In the past we also held a Trike-A-Thon for St. Jude’s Hospital and this past year we raised $4300.00!

We have a lot going on at our school teaching the children not only ABC’s but also what is happening in the world around them.   All the experiences we have to offer provide students with a wonderful foundation to build upon when they enter kindergarten.
