our programs
Hicksville Nursery School is chartered and registered by the Board of Regents of New York. Our programs provide varied activities with an abundance of materials and opportunities for free creative expression under the guidance of skilled, professionally trained, experienced teachers. Art, music and rhythmic movement, language arts, storytelling, dramatics, puzzles, playroom, books, and manipulative toys are all part of the daily program. We also have a full-sized gym used daily by all the classes, filled with cars and bikes to ride, play mats with slides, see-saw, climbing toys, and an area to play ball.
Playtime is an essential part of our day. Play encourages exploration. It exercises growing bodies and imaginations. It offers chances to interact with other children, and gives them practice using words. Play makes learning fun, and that's important. In the preschool years, a great deal of learning comes through just having a good time. For example, block building, a foundation of our social studies program, allows children to fully grasp the intricacies of communities, while gaining a better understanding of math and science through the properties of blocks. Students employ their emerging literacy skills through creating signage and other design elements for their buildings. Children hone their collaborative skills through block building as design and construction of structures is usually a team effort. Buildings such as pet shops, hospitals, and NYC buildings have been explored and created.
During the school year we also have the children participate in community activities to teach them about helping others. Some of the programs we have participated in the past are Valentine's for soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq, a food drive for a local food bank and a Trike-A-Thon to raise money for St. Jude's Hospital.
Field trips are included to broaden the child's understanding of the world in which he/she lives. A mid-session snack and drink (preferably water) are incorporated into each daily program.
